Dr Ruth Shean appointed chief executive officer of Disability Services Commission

A well-respected and long-time worker in the field of disabilities, both in Western Australia and nationally, has been chosen to head the State's Disability Services Commission.
Premier Richard Court today announced Dr Ruth Shean's appointment to the position of chief executive officer of the Disability Services Commission in the WA Public Sector.
Mr Court said Dr Shean's experience and expertise in the disability services area made her an excellent choice for the position.
"The Government is very proud of its significant achievements in the disability services area and plans to continue to lead the nation in setting new standards in this important area of community service," the Premier said.
"In her new position Dr Shean will lead a skilled and committed team dedicated to the delivery of improved services for people with disabilities in WA.
"Dr Shean will be a valuable asset to the commission and the WA public sector."
Dr Shean is a Doctor of Philosophy with a Master of Education and commenced her professional career in 1974 with the Education Department of WA, where she also worked as the program co-ordinator and adviser for the Gifted Program (North-West Metropolitan Region).
In 1984 Dr Shean was appointed as the executive director, Australian Council on Smoking and Health, where she played a significant role in the introduction of smoking control legislation in WA.
Since 1990 Dr Shean has been the chief executive officer for the Cerebral Palsy Association of WA (formerly The Spastic Welfare Association).
Currently Dr Shean serves as the national president for the Australian Cerebral Palsy Association, and is the deputy chair for the National Disability Advisory Council to the Federal Minister for Disability.
In 1997 Dr Shean was awarded the Distinguished Service Award, Australian Cerebral Palsy Association, for significant contribution to services for people with cerebral palsy.
