Planning Minister Richard Lewis said today that the former head of the Water Authority, Dr Wally Cox, had been appointed chief executive officer of the East Perth Redevelopment Authority.

Mr Lewis said the appointment would significantly benefit the East Perth project.

"Dr Cox has a wealth of experience in public sector management and brings considerable expertise to the authority," he said.

"It is an important time in the life of the project, as the Redevelopment Authority is now seeing parts of the renewal move off the drawing board and on to the site."

East Perth is the biggest urban renewal project  ever undertaken in Western Australia and will see a once forgotten area of the city rejuvenated.

When complete the 150 hectare redevelopment will provide a mix of residential, new commercial and cultural facilities close to the heart of Perth.

The Minister said Dr Cox formerly served on the State Planning Commission and was a Member of the Metropolitan and Country Planning Councils.

"This experience made Dr Cox an excellent choice for the appointment," Mr Lewis said.

"As head of the authority, Dr Cox is at the helm of one of the most exciting urban renewal projects under way in Australia."

The East Perth project is funded by the State Government through the East Perth Redevelopment Act and by the Federal Government through the Better Cities Program.

The State Government will contribute in excess of $60 million to the renewal and the Federal Government about $32 million.
