Dune restoration funding to help save beaches
11/2/00
A ground-breaking trial aimed at helping to save our beaches was given a boost today in the annual Coastwest/Coastcare community funding grants.
The restoration plan for a section of eroded dunes at City Beach is one of 59 projects across the State to share in more than $1 million in Coastwest/Coastcare grants.
A joint initiative of the State and Federal Governments, the funding was announced today by State Planning Minister Graham Kierath and Federal Environment Minister Robert Hill.
"Most Western Australians enjoy a unique relationship with the coast and this program helps ensure that is able to continue for future generations," Mr Kierath said.
The City Beach dune restoration trial will be co-ordinated by Cambridge Coastcare with expert advice from Kings Park's director of plant sciences, Dr Kingsley Dixon.
"It's hoped to become a benchmark for dune restoration and a demonstration for other groups to produce better, sustainable results," Dr Dixon said.
Senator Hill said the varied and often isolated nature of WA's coastline added an extra challenge to conservation projects.
"The projects for this year demonstrate the commitment of the community, industry and governments to meeting those challenges," Senator Hill said.
Other projects to be funded in the metropolitan area include the preservation of a popular section of Rottnest Island by boat owners who use the area.
Under the project, boat owners with moorings in the bays around Narrowneck have volunteered to help with erosion controls, revegetation and constructing a walk trail.
Open to schools, volunteers, business and interest groups, the Coastwest/Coastcare program has funded 252 projects across the State since it began in 1995.
Mr Kierath said it aimed to give individual communities the financial means to take an active role in coastal management.
"By seeking applications from the community, the program ensures the money goes to where the people on the ground believe it is needed most," Mr Kierath said.
"It gives concerned groups the ability to make a real difference in preserving their coastal environments."
