Dunsborough has been named the top tourism town in Western Australia.
Tourism Minister Norman Moore announced the $35,000 award at an industry function in Kununurra last night Saturday, October 16.
He said that the judges had chosen Dunsborough in recognition of its efforts to attract and welcome visitors.
It won the award from Albany, Busselton, Collie, Margaret River, Kojonup and Kununurra.
"These towns were chosen as finalists by the judges for outstanding marketing and presentation of themselves as attractive tourism destinations," he said.
"Each has outstanding tourism product to provide visitors with exceptional experiences."
Mr Moore also presented commendation awards and $5000 each to Kununurra, Kojonup and Busselton to go towards maximising their town's natural attractions.
Margaret River won the GWN $15,000 television marketing package.
The prize, which was presented for the first time this year, recognised Margaret River's success in staging special events which attracted visitors from outside the region.
Mr Moore said that the tourism industry generated more the $2 billion each year and employed one in every 12 Western Australians.
"Tourism can help hold country communities together," he said.
"If there are thriving tourism businesses within a region, then local towns will benefit.
"Importantly, young people in country areas can look forward to meaningful employment in the world's largest industry."
