Education and health facilities in Midland and Hills receive boost
17/9/93
Education and health are big winners in the 1993-94 State budget with substantial funds directed at improving facilities in the Midland and Hills area.
Premier Richard Court said overall spending by the Ministry of Education would rise by $48.2 million (4.2 per cent) to $1.2 billion, including provision for an additional 356 teachers and support staff.
Health Department spending would rise $64.6 million (five per cent) to $1.39 billion, including capital works costing $87.7 million.
Some of the key local projects being funded this financial year included:
· $8.8 million towards the upgrading of Swan Districts Hospital, including a new theatre complex, a 24-bed restorative unit, day surgery and hospital support services;
· $401,000 to complete the administration upgrade of Swan View Senior High School;
· $800,000 towards the $1.8 million upgrade of Middle Swan Primary School, to include eight classrooms, library resource centre and art and music rooms;
· $3.25 million for additions and improvements at Toodyay District High School;
· $1.13 million for additions and improvements to Bindoon Primary School; and
· $1.03 million to complete classroom additions at Herne Hill Primary School.
Mr Court said the strong focus on education would help build a better future for the State's young people.
"Children are our future and it is important we direct sufficient resources now to ensure they have every opportunity to excel," he said.
In line with the Government's decision earlier this year to secure a central livestock selling facility, the Midland saleyards' site has been acquired and $500,000 allocated to complete essential upgrading and modifications.
Mr Court said $14,000 had also been allocated to complete the $80,000 refurbishment of the Midland licensing centre;
The Premier said Western Australia had much to be confident about despite the difficulties the Government faced in bringing the State's finances back to an even keel.
"I have complete confidence in the future of this State and my Government is committed to policies directed to promoting economic development and job opportunities and to enhancing the quality of life for all Western Australians," he said.
