Family and Children's Services has set up an emergency centre to help families in Wundowie affected by the bushfires.

Family and Children's Services Minister Cheryl Edwardes said food, financial and counselling assistance were available from the centre to residents who had suffered loss or trauma.

The operation was based at the Wundowie Library and included two professional counselling staff available between 9 am and 5 pm.

In addition, Family and Children's Services' clinical psychologists were available in Wundowie, Northam and Midland to help residents cope with grief and loss.

Mrs Edwardes said the response was part of Family and Children's Services' commitment to supporting the Western Australian community in times of crisis.

"As residents come to grips with the reality of the impact of the bushfire devastation they will experience a range of emotions," she said.

"It is important that they know this is a normal reaction and nothing to be afraid of.

"Professional staff at Family and Children's Services are urging residents to talk about their feelings and if necessary seek professional help through the emergency centre."
