Swimming will now be a year-round activity at Forrestfield Senior High School thanks to the heating of the school's swimming pool.
Health Minister and local member John Day today officially opened the new $300,000 enclosure and unveiled a plaque to commemorate the occasion.
Mr Day commended the high level of community involvement in the project, which included contributions from the school, its P & C Association, the Ministry of Sport and Recreation, Kalamunda Swimming Club, and the Kalamunda Shire Council.
"It's a tremendous example of State and local government - and members of the wider community - working together to provide an important community resource," Mr Day said.
"The State Government was very pleased to approve funding - and we believe it is money well spent.
"The reason you have been able to build such an impressive facility is that it has been a project for the whole community.
"The students here are key beneficiaries, but they're not the only ones.
"The swimming pool, with its much-improved heating and year-round protection from the elements, will be enjoyed by a wide cross-section of people.
"The primary school will use it, as will the local swimming club and a whole range of people from all walks of life - many of whom have directly contributed to its ultimate success."
The project has been supported by the WA Swimming and WA Surf Lifesaving Associations.
Forrestfield Senior High School has specialist swimming and soccer programs and numerous sporting teams competing outside school hours.
The Kalamunda Swimming Club manages the after-hours use of the school pool and vacation and holiday swimming programs, including scuba courses, are also held after hours. Management is through the swimming management group which is also looking at ways to expand community use of the facility.
