Housing Minister and Albany MLA Kevin Prince today praised the excellent standard of building and construction in the Albany region.

Mr Prince said building and construction in Western Australia was a very competitive industry, which gave WA homebuyers the best value for money in Australia.

"It is competition that stimulates, encourages and rewards pride in workmanship, design and innovation and is a positive action which continues to contribute to the maintenance and raising of building industry standards in general throughout the State," he said.

The Minister acknowledged the efforts of local builders and tradespeople when presenting awards at the fourth annual Master Builders' Association housing awards in Albany at the weekend.

"The Master Builders' Association has been at the forefront of recognising and rewarding the promotion of quality products in the building industry," he said.

"Acknowledgement of the need for quality has contributed to WA setting the benchmark in the industry on a national scale, which was recognised recently when WA builders won half of the 10 National Housing Industry Association Awards presented."

Mr Prince said the enthusiasm shown for this year's competition by regional members of the building industry was reflected in the record entries received.

"The number of entries received this year was more than double last year and shows the benefit of encouraging excellence," he said.

"The industry appears to thrive on competition while at the same time strives for excellence to provide a quality product at a fair price.

"These awards provide the opportunity for the industry to show they are serious about what they do and have a commitment to do even better."

Mr Prince also said he was pleased the State Government, through Homeswest, was a major participant in the WA building and construction industry and was part of the industry's thrust for excellence.

"I commend the Master Builders' Association for the continuing success of the awards; members of the local industry who support them and the sponsors, without whom there would be no competition," he said.

A list of all award winners is available from the Master Builders' Association Albany office.
