Exmouth and Onslow to receive $100,000 for recovery campaign
28/5/99
The popular tourist towns of Exmouth and Onslow will be the focus of a $100,000 recovery campaign starting this weekend.
Tourism Minister Norman Moore said the television and radio campaign would run for six weeks.
It was part of the strategy he had asked the Western Australian Tourism Commission to implement to encourage tourists to visit the towns which were hard hit by Cyclone Vance in April.
Mr Moore said the latest campaign would start on Sunday with regional radio in the southern part of the State and would include the towns of Albany, Bunbury and Esperance.
From June 6, the focus of the regional radio advertisements would expand to include the north of the State, including the towns of Geraldton, Carnarvon, Karratha, Port Hedland and the Kimberley.
The metropolitan radio and television advertisements would start from June 20.
The television messages would include one of the WA Tourism Commission's 12 Brand WA Elle Macpherson commercials and would be shown on all three commercial networks.
The chosen commercial, featuring Elle at Ningaloo Reef, would be tagged with a Skywest package encouraging people to travel to Exmouth.
Mr Moore said the first stage of the strategy involved the production and launch of the Exmouth Now bulletin, to keep travellers informed about what tours, accommodation and attractions were on offer in the towns.
There had been six consecutive weekly editions so far, with each being distributed to the broader community via backpacker hostels, roadhouses, petrol stations, shops and caravan parks in an effort to reach tourists already 'on the road'.
"Exmouth Now was essentially designed as a communication tool for people already travelling within WA's North," Mr Moore said.
"We wanted to communicate to people who might be without television and radios, that both towns did have tourism facilities available.
"We did not want traffic bypassing these areas because of a misconception."
