Extended shopping hours in Perth Metro Area for Christmas and New Year [Audio]
31/8/99
Fair Trading Minister Doug Shave has announced extended shopping hours in the Perth metropolitan area for Christmas and New Year.
"The hours, based on the advice of the Retail Shops Advisory Committee, apply to most large shops including department stores and supermarkets," Mr Shave said.
The extra hours mean all shops could open for at least 65 hours in the six days before Christmas. Shops with Small or Special Shop certificates could also open outside these times.
"On Sunday, December 19, all shops will be able to open between noon and 6pm," Mr Shave said.
"Other changes will be on Tuesday 21, Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 when all shops can open from 8am-9pm."
"On Christmas and New Year's Eve, which fall on Friday, shops can open from 8am-6pm. These hours also apply to the Perth and Fremantle tourism precincts, where shops normally trade to 9pm on Fridays."
The Minister said the 6pm closing on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve would allow staff to join in festivities on those nights,
Shops (except those with exemptions) would be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Monday, December 27, and on New Year's Day. They could open on all other days, including the public holidays on Tuesday, December 28 and Monday, January 3.
"It's a busy time at work and at home and we need the extra time for shopping. I think the hours will suit traders, consumers and employees," Mr Shave said.
Outside Perth local councils could apply for hours to suit their communities. The Christmas and New Year hours would not apply to motor vehicle dealers.
