Commerce and Trade Minister Hendy Cowan today released for public comment a report on the feasibility of establishing a marine service industrial estate at Dampier.

The report, commissioned by the Department of Commerce and Trade, LandCorp and the Dampier Port Authority, with input from the Department of Resources Development, follows the announcement last year of the State Government's decision to undertake a feasibility study of the proposal.

"The report is significant because it reflects a 'whole of government approach' and proactive planning to meet the needs of industry," Mr Cowan said.

"There is reason to be optimistic about the potential of new oil and gas exploration and recovery projects as the Carnarvon Basin, off shore from the Pilbara coast, is now Australia's most productive oil and gas area."

The report identified the need for:

·      a barge ramp;

·      a slipway for vessels from 600 - 2000 tonnes;

·      a mooring area for small vessels to 35m;

·      700m of land backed wharf with alongside depth of 7m and laydown area;

·      off-base serviced industrial land of some 100ha; and -

·      channel, basin dredging and navigational aids.

Lands Minister Doug Shave said the establishment of such infrastructure would require a large amount of capital investment from both the public and private sectors, estimated to be about $50 million.

"However, before any financial commitment is made, relevant Government agencies and the community need to work together to ensure the benefits of such a project would justify the associated costs," Mr Shave said.

He said the Government welcomed public comment on the report during a four-week period ending July 18. Comments can be directed in writing to Dr Joseph Patroni from the Department of Commerce and Trade, 6th Floor, 170 St George's Terrace, Perth.
