The State Government has presented its final payment of a $500,000 grant for the building of Coolgardie's new multi-purpose recreation centre.

Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore handed over a cheque for $125,000 to shire president Billie Ingham today during a site inspection. The Government had previously invested $375,000 in the building of the centre.

Mr Moore said the $1.2 million multi-sport complex in Sylvester Street, Coolgardie, would give the area a recreation centre it deserved.

"The complex has provision for badminton, netball, volleyball, tennis and basketball, while carpets can be laid for indoor bowls," he said.

"Apart from sport and recreation, there are plans to make the complex a real community centre, by providing a venue for adult education lessons, such as music and art.

"The Shire of Coolgardie has shown a lot of imagination with this project. I know there were a lot of disappointments along the way, but perseverance has paid off.

"I congratulate the shire for its efforts and I know the people of Coolgardie have a centre to be proud off."

The State Government funding was made available through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) system.

"CSRFF is a tremendous way for the State Government to help communities develop and is an important part of our Sport and Recreation policy which aims to increase funding to sport and recreation facilities," Mr Moore said.

He said the funding of such facilities was an essential part of the ongoing Government commitment to provide well-managed facilities for all Western Australians, whether they were occasional participants or elite athletes.
