People who were suffering financial hardship would have access to a financial counselling service which would be set up in Belmont, Family and Children's Services Minister Cheryl Edwardes said today.

Mrs Edwardes announced the department would provide $39,941 a year for a new sponsor for a financial counselling service for residents of Belmont and surrounding areas.

The department is calling for expressions of interest from organisations and community groups who wish to run the service.

Mrs Edwardes said the service would give financial counselling to families and individuals on low incomes, who are having problems with their money.

"People are helped to budget and make informed decisions about their finances," she said.

"They are given the ability to identify and deal with problems by learning skills and gaining a knowledge of options available.

"The centre, which will offer support with counselling and advice, can also negotiate on behalf of its clients.

"A great deal of stress is taken out of people's lives when they can manage their finances well which is a benefit to them and the community."
