In a breakthrough Enterprise Agreement, firefighters from the Fire and Rescue Service will receive a 12 per cent salary increase.

Emergency Services Minister John Day said the agreement represented the culmination of a tremendous effort over the past 14 months by both the management of the FRS and the United Firefighters' Union.

"I applaud all those involved in finalising this landmark industrial agreement which benefits everyone - most importantly our firefighters and the community of Western Australia," Mr Day said.

He said the salary increase would be delivered in two separate six per cent instalments, the first being payable from January 14. The second increase would come into effect in another 12 months, based on the implementation of agreed fire prevention-based initiatives.

"Firefighters will now officially incorporate into their daily work schedule not only their traditional fire suppression and rescue role, but also the provision of additional services in the area of prevention," the Minister said.

"This means they will work one-on-one with the people of WA to promote and demonstrate practical fire prevention and safety measures."

The agreement was certified in the Australian Industrial Relations Commission on Wednesday.

Presiding over the hearing, Deputy President Bryant of the AIRC congratulated all parties involved on their tremendous achievement.

Referring to the award simplification which was certified in tandem with the Enterprise Agreement, Deputy President Bryant said it could become a role model.

"It is good to see that we now have one employer in WA who has it right and it might become something of a guiding tool for those that are yet to follow," he said.

The acting executive director of the Fire and Rescue Service, Bill Forbes, said the agreement was a major achievement for both firefighters and to help safeguard the WA community.

"I am delighted that the agreement has reached fruition," he said.

"We can now all move forward into this new year fully embracing the concept of working in the community, with the community, for the community and explore the many positive opportunities that lie ahead."
