Fisheries WA will consolidate its Broome services with new facilities
8/9/99
Fisheries WA will consolidate its Broome services in new facilities to be built near the Broome wharf, Fisheries Minister Monty House said today.
Mr House said the new premises would accommodate the Agency's Broome District Office, Northern Regional Office, and officers responsible for the Australian Fishing Zone (AFZ) in the Pilbara and Kimberley.
The complex would be built adjacent to the Broome jetty by private developers. The establishment and fit-out of the new office for Fisheries WA would cost $300,000.
Mr House said the new facility would enhance the Agency's services to the pearling, commercial and recreational fisheries sectors in the region. Fisheries WA would be a co-tenant with the Port of Broome as part of the joint servicing arrangement between Fisheries WA and the Department of Transport.
Mr House said the Government was continuing its efforts to enhance the provision of fisheries services in regional Western Australia. Regional and District offices have been established in Geraldton, Albany, Fremantle, Carnarvon and Busselton.
"The proposed Broome office is another part of the ongoing regionalisation of fisheries operations," Mr House said.
"It is imperative that Fisheries WA be well positioned to provide its services to its customers and the communities that it serves.
"This new office will give Fisheries WA a higher profile in this historically significant fishing centre and is in close proximity to the Tropical Aquaculture Park.
"It is also another demonstration of Transport and Fisheries WA coming together in their service delivery."
Mr House said apart from new the office, the complex would have shared facilities such as a large conference room, meeting room and special interview rooms and facilities for the AFZ section.
The conference room would be able to accommodate all Fisheries WA clients and industry meetings, including the Pearling Industry Advisory Committee, the peak pearling advisory body to the Minister.
A client service area and reception would be incorporated in the design to capitalise on the high number of people that visit the Port of Broome and the Broome Jetty.
