September 2, 1997
Riding goofy-foot, lipslide or ollying over jump ramps will probably be some of the jargon used at an inaugural forum to be held in Perth tomorrow.
To be opened by Youth Minister Mike Board the forum will discuss a range of issues dealing with roller-blading and skateboarding around Perth.
Issues will include what skateboarding facilities are available in Perth, what is being planned, what makes a good skateboard facility and how can skateboarders contribute to the design, management and planning of facilities.
The forum will also consider some of the legal and risk management issues related to skateboarding facilities.
Representatives from the Skateboarding Association of WA, Youth Legal Service and the Local Government Insurance Service will address the forum which will be held at the Town of Vincent's administration centre, starting at 9am. It has been organised by the Skateboarding Association of WA in conjunction with the Heirisson Island Rotary Club and the Ministry of Sport and Recreation.
Mr Board said it was exciting to see young people get together and take some responsibility in the interests of their sport and recreation.
"They have shown great leadership and a sense of citizenship and I am confident their contribution will assist local governments decide where to locate and how to design facilities for young people who want to use their skateboards," he said.
"There are many important issues relating to skateboarding in the inner city and this forum will give young people a real chance to have their say.
"It is a tribute to the organisers' efforts which should be rewarded in the long term."
Mr Board encouraged local government and other sectors involved in providing youth facilities to research the needs of young people.
"It is vital we recognise that there needs have changed in recent years," the Minister said.
"We can no longer be satisfied with some of the traditional facilities provided for young people around the State.
"We must seek the input of young people, listen to them and be able to appropriately provide places where that will meet their needs."
