Western Australians looking for jobs have a new tool to help them gain a competitive edge with employers, Employment and Training Minister Graham Kierath said today.

Mr Kierath said the Western Australian Department of Training had produced a free Job Search Guide to help people find and apply for jobs.

He said the guide was particularly useful during the peak period for job seekers, as school leavers and other graduates enter the labour market.

"The guide helps job seekers identify opportunities to suit their skills and interests, explains how to apply for a job, and gives tips on what employers look for," the Minister said.

"It explains the importance of knowing your strengths and weaknesses and contains lots of advice on job hunting, writing applications and resumes, and handling interviews.

"It also helps job seekers to evaluate their performance and to identify opportunities to improve at each stage."

Mr Kierath added that the Job Search Guide included contact details for Job Links throughout the State, and a range of other services providing practical support and advice for young job seekers.

The Job Search Guide is available from the WA Training Information Centre -Access All Areas in Perth, and from Job Links throughout the State. Individual copies are free and bulk orders cost $1 per copy.

The guide is also available on the Internet at www.getaccess.com.au
