Fremantle's Warrawee Women's Refuge guaranteed funding
4/3/97
The City of Fremantle's Warrawee Women's Refuge has been guaranteed funding until mid-1998, Family and Children's Services Minister Rhonda Parker and Federal Family Services Minister Judi Moylan announced today.
This means the refuge can provide safe crisis accommodation and support for up to five women at a time, with or without children, who are escaping domestic violence.
"The refuge provides valuable emotional support, resource information and basic counselling to women and children," Mrs Parker said.
"The safe, secure setting and helpful information provided by the centre allows women to make informed decisions and choices about their lives and break the cycle of domestic violence."
Family and Children's Services has granted the refuge $251,319 a year until June 30, 1998 under the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP).
SAAP is funded by both the State and Commonwealth Governments to provide accommodation and support for homeless people in Western Australia.
There are currently more than 100 SAAP services available in metropolitan, rural and remote areas throughout the state.
"SAAP services provide for basic needs and support so people can concentrate on finding information and making informed choices," Mrs Moylan said:.
"The funding demonstrates the Commonwealth and State Governments' commitment to providing support to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
"This benefits the whole community."
