Funding - Karratha Youth Housing Project
24/3/97
The Karratha Youth Housing Project received a boost today with the announcement of a big increase in funding.
Family and Children's Services Minister Rhonda Parker and Federal Family Services Minister Judi Moylan announced that funding for the project would rise by 30 percent to $200,000 a year until June 30, 1998.
The increase from $154,384 reflected the important work of the project in providing crisis accommodation and support for up to eight homeless young people, between 15 and 25 years old, at a time.
The centre is funded through the Supported Accommodation and Assistance Program (SAAP), a joint State/Commonwealth initiative which provides accommodation and support for homeless people in Western Australia.
There are more than 100 SAAP services available in metropolitan, rural and remote areas throughout the state.
"It is very important for young people without homes to have access to safe, secure accommodation so they can concentrate on examining their situations and making informed decisions about the future," Mrs Parker said.
"This service provides a safe, supportive environment where they can find out about various services and options, work through their crises and develop essential social and living skills that will help them in daily life."
Mrs Moylan said the service provided valuable information, development opportunities and support for young people facing a crisis. The skills they developed could help them avoid similar situations in the future.
"This agreement demonstrates the Commonwealth and State Governments' commitment to strengthening families and providing support for homeless people of all ages," she said.
