Funding for Darkan high school renovations
21/4/94
The Darkan District High School has been allocated $45,000 for much-needed renovations.
Education Minister Norman Moore said today the funds would enable the upgrading of the administration area and the painting of the school's exterior.
Mr Moore said work was scheduled to start soon and the maintenance was made possible by the allocation of an extra $5 million for school maintenance across Western Australia. The funds were identified by the Cabinet estimates committee through improved efficiencies across Government.
The Darkan project was one of more than 800 maintenance tasks identified for special attention and brought forward by the State Government.
"The Member for Wagin, Mr Bob Wiese, has been lobbying strongly for these improvements to the Darkan District High School and I am pleased that this special maintenance package has been able to meet his request on behalf of his electorate," Mr Moore said.
"I will be arguing for further allocations for school maintenance in the 1994-95 State Budget, because we have a long way to go before we can address the estimated $400 million in school maintenance left over from the last Government."
Maintenance approved under the $5 million package includes the re-roofing of 11 Government schools at a cost of more than $700,000 and general maintenance improvements to some 513 schools across the State.
The list of priority projects was developed by the Education Department in consultation with district offices and individual schools.
