Family and Children's Services is to fund the Moora Youth Group, enabling it to make a valuable contribution to the community.

Family and Children's Services Minister Cheryl Edwardes announced today that the department had signed an agreement with the service which guaranteed it $33,252 a year until June 30, 1998.

Mrs Edwardes said the service would give support to young people aged between 12 and 18 (or younger if necessary) who were at risk.

"Young people will be able to take advantage of informal counselling and advice so they can deal with or prevent crises in their lives," she said.

"There will be physically and mentally challenging activities which will build self-esteem and give the young people confidence with their peers.

"This means they can cope with the challenges of daily living in a positive way, which will help individuals, families and the community. "

Mrs Edwardes said she believed the agreement marked the start of a good relationship which would benefit the local community.

"This agreement will allow the agency to provide programs and courses to meet the needs of local residents," she said.
