Family and Children's Services Minister Cheryl Edwardes today announced funding for two new occasional child care services in the town of Port Hedland.

Mrs Edwardes said a total of $28,000 was to be made available for the establishment of the services in both Port and South Hedland during the next two years.

This would allow for 14 places at the Len Taplin Centre and 14 at the Treloar Child Care Centre.

"These services are the first of their kind in the Hedland area and will give parents occasional care for their children in the 0-5 year age range," Mrs Edwardes said.

The Minister also announced she had approved $29,926 capital funding for the Len Taplin Day Centre's Out of School Hours Care facility, the first of its kind in Port Hedland.

The Len Taplin Out of School Hours Care facility offers care for primary school age children before and after school and school holidays.

Children who attend primary school at Port Hedland, Cooke Point and Saint Cecilia's College use the newly opened Centre.

"The Len Taplin Management Committee has expanded its services this year to meet family needs," Mrs Edwardes said.

"The committee reviewed the needs of local families and found a need existed for an out of school hours care service in Port Hedland."

The facility is situated next to the Len Taplin Day Care Centre in Cooke Point, in the old Cooke Point Medical Suite.

The funds will be used to aircondition and renovate the building.
