Funding to support sports programs aimed at seniors
3/2/99
Sports attracting seniors to their ranks during 1999 are to get State Government support.
Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore today announced a $150,000 fund to support sporting associations which set up programs aimed at seniors during the International Year of Older Persons.
"Studies clearly show that active seniors are healthier, happier and fitter than those who do not remain physically active," Mr Moore said.
"The State Government is therefore working with State sporting associations to initiate programs aimed at getting more seniors involved in sport.
"This is also an opportunity for sports to access a steadily growing, but discerning, market for leisure activities.
"The State Government has an excellent track record in supporting physical activity among seniors, working closely with the Seniors Recreation Council on events such as Have a Go Day and this program will extend our support.
"State sporting associations coming up with programs aimed at seniors will be able to apply for funding through the Ministry of Sport and Recreation.
"Every senior who is encouraged to take up a new sport, continue their involvement or perhaps return to a sport they used to enjoy when younger, is good news for the community.
"The International Year of Older Persons offers an opportunity for all Western Australians to salute the role of seniors in society and this program will provide enjoyment, fun and fitness to many."
