Further funding for horticulture in Kimberley region

Horticulture in the Kimberley will receive a boost with the allocation of a further $1 million per year for the next four years million by the Coalition to assist the rapid development of this important industry throughout Western Australia.
Mr House said the allocation of a further $4 million would ensure the development of WA's horticulture, viticulture and floriculture industries through the provision of additional development staff based in key regional locations and on-the-ground projects and activities.
"Horticulture in the Ord River Irrigation area has proved to be a viable and important industry which the Coalition is keen to help develop further for the benefit of the whole region," he said.
Mr House said the Kimberley would also be boosted through the provision of a new $2.64 million package to carry out research and development in conjunction with industry to further the establishment of the cotton industry in the region.
He said the Coalition was also committed to trade and market development through initiatives such as supporting the development of new industries like olives, Australian bushfoods, clean agricultural products, jojoba and on-farm aquaculture.
"The Coalition will ensure that Agriculture Western Australia's research, development and extension activities in areas such as crop and plan breeding, meat, wool and livestock development and sustainable systems is targeted at WA farmers meeting market demands and achieving high productivity and profitability," the Minister said.
"Farmers will also directly benefit through the allocation of a further $150,000 towards the expansion of the successful and innovative Safe Quality Food (SQF) 2000 quality assurance program.
"We will encourage as many producers as possible to participate in this practical quality management system which ensures customers world-wide that their produce is of the highest quality and 'clean and green'."
Further Coalition agricultural trade and market development commitments to the Kimberley region include:
· ensuring that the development of a further 64,000ha of land for a mix of agricultural and horticultural enterprises and industries in the Ord River irrigation scheme north and east of Kununurra is undertaken as soon as possible by interested parties.
