Environment Minister Kevin Minson has approved a further $207,000 in grants to community-based conservation groups.

Mr Minson said today the latest allocation brought to almost $305,000 the total in funding for community groups under the State Government's environment grants program.

"The Government is committed to conserving and protecting Western Australia's unique environment for the benefit of present and future generations," he said.

"Our environment policy recognises the important contribution of community-based conservation groups towards this aim and has made a specific commitment to support their work."

Mr Minson said the latest grants were:

·   Greening WA - $100,000

·   Green Skills - $60,000

·   Conservation Council of WA - $20,000

·   Environment Centre - $10,000

·   Tree Society - $9,000

·   Australian Conservation Foundation - $8,000.

Mr Minson said he was pleased the Government was able to maintain its level of funding to community organisations, particularly in light of the tight budgetary conditions facing all Government agencies.

"Clearly, it is beyond the Government's resources to fund every community conservation project but we will continue to support many worthwhile plans and programs," he said.

The Minister said while the Government would maintain the level of funding at around $305,000 in the future, he was keen to see other community-based groups which did not receive funding under current arrangements have the opportunity to promote projects.

Because of this, the Government would advertise for applications for future grants.

"Peak organisations will still be able to apply for funds, especially where these organisations contribute to community debate through making submissions on conservation issues to Government," Mr Minson said.

"However, funds provided solely for administration will be limited because the Government's priority is to promote projects with 'on-the-ground' applications.

"In particular, the Government is keen to promote projects which involve local communities and groups which have used their initiative in seeking extra funds and resources from other sources."

Mr Minson said applications would be called in August each year.
