Health Minister Graham Kierath today congratulated Gascoyne Health Service for winning the tender to provide a nursing post at Coral Bay during the tourist season.

Coral Bay has less than 100 permanent residents but during the tourist season, from April to October, about 2,000 tourists visit the town each week.

This number has increased by more than 17 per cent over the past three years and the majority of visitors are over 50 years of age.

"Gascoyne Health Services is to be congratulated for winning the tender for the operation of the Coral Bay nursing post," Mr Kierath said.

"The service has shown that it can compete successfully against other providers to offer a comprehensive nursing service which will provide nursing management of medical, surgical, orthopaedic, paediatric and gynaecological conditions.

"As well, the nursing post will provide an immunisation program, early childhood surveillance and screening programs and health promotion education."

The nursing post opened on Monday, April 3 and is located in the town's new shopping arcade.  It comprises a waiting room and two consulting rooms.

The tender is for two years with an option of a further two years.
