The State Government has given the go-ahead for the first stage of a major new Homeswest housing development in Bunbury.

Premier Richard Court said today that tenders had been called for the first stage of the Carey Park housing estate.

Stage one is located between Xavier and Bright Streets in the Bunbury suburb of Carey Park.

Redevelopment of Carey Park is part of Homeswest's $9.3 million building program for the South-West outlined in this year's State Budget.

Mr Court said work on stage one would involve the construction of 17 units to replace six old properties which Homeswest had demolished.

He said stage one comprised a group housing development of eight rental units of one and two bedrooms for seniors and nine free-standing three bedroom rental homes for families.

"Stage one is part of a five to 10-year plan to redevelop Carey Park that will eventually see Homeswest's 277 existing homes replaced by more than 540 homes," the Premier said.

"However at the end of the redevelopment, Homeswest plans to sell off most of the land, reducing its presence to about 12 to 15 per cent of all 'homes in the area."

Mr Court said redevelopment of Carey Park had been made possible by recently completed deep sewerage work in the area.

Tenders for the first stage would close later this month and construction was expected to begin before the end of the year.
