Children can look forward to an action-packed school holiday, with the announcement of new Government-funded holiday programs throughout the State's rural areas.
"Thirty nine organisations have been funded to run Youth Development Holiday Programs for young people in secondary school years 8-12 during the January holidays," Family and Children's Services Minister June van de Klashorst announced today.
"Young people will be able to participate in a range of indoor and outdoor activities including individual and team sports, art and music workshops, cultural awareness exercises and life skills lessons.
"The programs will provide young people with challenges and many new experiences. It will enhance their self-esteem and help them to develop social, teamwork and leadership skills."
Mrs van de Klashorst said the funding demonstrated the Government's commitment to supporting young people and their families to build stronger communities.
The following organisations have received funding:
Eastern Goldfields YMCA - $900 for a 24-day holiday program for youth aged 12-16 years from Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Activities will include camping, rock-climbing, go-karting, swimming, horse-riding and excursions to the cinema and local waterslides.
Eastern Goldfields Aboriginal Advancement Council - $900 for a 10-day holiday program for Aboriginal youth aged 12-17 years from Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Participants will be provided with picnics, trips to the movies, bush excursions and cultural, sporting and arts days.
Norseman Youth Centre - $900 for a Metropolitan and Great Southern Tour for youth aged 12-18 years from the local area. The tour will focus on careers, arts, sports, lifeskills and the environment. Participants will be taken to Perth, Fremantle, the University of WA, Ice World, Busselton and Margaret River.
Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku - $900 for a six-day sports festival for youth in secondary school years 8-12 from Aboriginal communities in the Warburton area. The program will be conducted over two weeks. The first week will focus on rules, team-building, decision-making and health and the second week on how to play competition sport. Sports will include basketball, football and softball.
Bega Garnbirringu Health Services Aboriginal Corporation - $900 for a two week adventure bush camp for youth aged 12-17 years from the Goldfields and Esperance region. Camp activities will include horse-riding, trail-bike riding, basketball, volleyball, canoeing, BMX riding, traditional hunting and storytelling.
Burringurrah Community Aboriginal Corporation - $1,800 for a four week holiday program for youth in secondary school years 8-12 from the Burringurrah community. Those attending will be provided with activities such as basketball, football, softball, swimming lessons, pool and dart competitions, bush-walks, self-development classes and art and craft classes run by local artists.
Geraldton Streetwork Aboriginal Corporation - $1,220 for a 15-day holiday program for youth in secondary school years 8-12 from Geraldton and outlying areas. Participants will be provided with days trips to Dongara and Mullewa, cultural visits, awareness days and art, beach and sporting activities.
Shire of Mt Magnet - $900 for a 10-day holiday program for youth in secondary school years 8-10 from Mt Magnet and surrounding districts. Those attending will be provided with sporting afternoons, games days and activities such as cooking, bike-riding and bush-walking.
Mullewa Telecentre Inc - $580 for a six-day computer course for youth in secondary school years 8-10 from Mullewa and surrounding districts. Participants will learn how to operate personal computers, send emails and use scanners, digital cameras and the Internet.
Youth Involvement Council, Port Hedland - $1,250 for a two-day camp for predominantly Aboriginal youth aged 12-17 years from the local area. The camp will focus on team-building, cultural relationships and positive alternatives to substance abuse.
Newman YMCA - $1,250 for a six-day holiday program for youth aged 12-18 years from the local area. Activities will include abseiling, cooking, tapestry, orienteering, mural art, bushcraft, mystery hikes, beach volleyball, a pool party, and survival skills and first aid lessons.
Port Hedland Police and Citizen's Youth Club - $1,250 for a holiday program for youth aged 12-18 years from the local community. Participants will be provided with camping trips to Marble Bar, Yandeyarra and local rivers and waterholes.
Tom Price Youth Centre - $1,250 for a holiday program for youth aged 13-18 years from Tom Price and local Aboriginal communities. Those attending will be provided with sporting competitions, art and craft activities, discos, day trips to Karajini National Park, and dance, drama and music workshops.
Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes - $560 for a nine-day holiday program for youth aged 12-17 years from the local shire. Activities will include abseiling, rock-climbing, beach volleyball, arts and crafts, ten pin bowling, rollerblading, music sessions and video nights.
Old York Fire Station Community Centre - $810 for a seven-day holiday program for youth in secondary school years 8-12 from the York area. Those attending will be provided with computer lessons, dancing and puppet workshops, art and music activities and a bus trip to the Wet 'N' Wild Fun Park in Kalamunda.
Agencies for South-West Accommodation, Bunbury - $900 for a four-day holiday program for youth aged 12-17 years from the State's South-West. Participants will be provided with a range of physically challenging activities designed to enhance their fitness levels and team work skills. Activities will include camping, hiking, orienteering, canoeing, kickboxing and self-defence lessons.
Agencies for South-West Accommodation, Augusta - $500 for a two-day holiday program for youth aged 12-17 years from the Shire of Augusta/Margaret River. Those attending will be provided with an overnight camp in Boranup National Park incorporating beach activities, abseiling, caving and a night-time nature walk.
City of Mandurah - Billy Dower Youth Centre - $590 for a 20-day holiday program for youth aged 12-18 years from the Mandurah area. Those attending will be provided with a range of indoor and outdoor activities including horse-riding, ice-skating, arts and crafts, canoeing and trips to the movies and Adventure World.
Kojonup Aboriginal Corporation - $580 for a camp in the State's South-West for Aboriginal youth aged 14-17 years from Kojonup. Activities will include fishing, sports, and instruction in music, traditions, bush tucker, boomerang throwing and tribal dance.
Town of Narrogin - $805 for a four-day holiday program for secondary school students from the local high school and agricultural college. The program will focus on healthy, fun alternatives to drugs and alcohol. Activities will include a dance party, ice-skating and excursions to Adventure World and the Wet 'N' Wild Fun Park.
Fairbridge Village - $590 for a four-day camp for youth aged 12-17 years, including those who are disabled or with special needs, from the Peel region. Participants will be provided with a range of adventure activities including abseiling, white-water rafting, hiking and canoeing.
Revolution Youth Group, Manjimup - $580 for a holiday program for youth in secondary school years 8-12 from Manjimup. Activities will include fishing, surfing, horse-riding, rollerskating and beach games.
Toodyay Blue Light Youth Group, Toodyay Advisory Council - $600 for a day trip to Adventure World for youth aged 13-18 years from Toodyay, Wundowie and surrounding districts.
Busselton YMCA - $650 for a five-day holiday program for youth aged 12-17 years from the Busselton and Dunsborough areas. Activities will include abseiling, rock-climbing, canoeing, surfing, caving, sailing, cooking, art classes and video days.
Network Family Support WA Inc, Mandurah - $280 for a two-day holiday program for disabled youth aged 12-17 years from the Peel region. The program will comprise activities at Adventure World and ten pin bowling.
Wundowie Youth Advisory Council - $535 for a day trip to Adventure World for youth aged 13-18 years from Wundowie, Bakers Hill, Clackline and Wooroloo.
Tambellup Youth Centre - $580 for a 16-day holiday program for youth aged 12-18 years from Tambellup and surrounding areas. Participants will be offered a range of team-based activities aimed at improving self-esteem, and cultural interaction and understanding.
Waroona Community Centre Inc - $650 for a three-day holiday program for youth aged 13-16 years from the Waroona area. Participants will be provided with a variety of indoor and outdoor activities including white-water rafting, arts and crafts, ten pin bowling, skateboarding and trips to the movies.
Boyup Brook Teenscene Inc - $700 for a holiday program for youth aged 12-16 years from the Boyup Brook area. Activities will include abseiling, canoeing, a foot rally and a camping trip to Rottnest.
Walpole Sport and Recreation Inc - $450 for a six-day holiday program for youth in secondary school years 8-12 from Walpole and surrounding areas. Activities will include canoeing, kayaking, rafting, rock-climbing, abseiling, fishing, rollerblading, indoor soccer, a First Aid course and bushwalking along the Bibbulmun Track.
Mandurah Returned Services League (RSL) Sub Branch - $640 for a three-day holiday program for youth aged 12-18 years from the Navy, Army, Air Force Cadets, SES, Junior Fire Brigade, Police Rangers, St John Ambulance and Scouts and Guides in the local area. Participants will be provided with a range of physically and mentally challenging outdoor activities designed to develop teamwork and leadership skills.
Djarindjin Aboriginal Corporation - $500 for a holiday program for youth in secondary school years 8-12 from the Djarindjin Community. Those attending will be provided with cultural activities and recreational activities such as fishing, camping, basketball, rollerskating and 8 ball competitions.
Halls Creek Youth, Sport and Recreation - $800 for a five-day camp for youth in secondary school years 8-12 from Halls Creek and surrounding communities. Elders will help participants develop an understanding of culture, bush food, medicine and crafts. Activities will include story-telling, song-writing, sports, dancing, preparing and sharing food and budgeting and nutrition lessons.
Bidyadanga Aboriginal Community - $700 for a holiday program for youth aged 12-18 years from the Bidyadanga Community. Activities will include arts and crafts, discos, fishing and basketball competitions, and music lessons and presentation nights.
Kununurra Youth Services - $700 for a 20-day outdoor adventure program for predominantly Aboriginal youth aged 12-18 years from the East Kimberley region. The program will comprise bush skills lessons, abseiling, rock-climbing, canoeing and water activities.
Bardi Aborigines Association, One Arm Point - $500 for a holiday program for youth aged 13-18 years from the local community. Aboriginal elders will teach participants about fishing, hunting, bush tucker and cultural awareness. Other activities will include painting murals on the new youth centre and co-ordinating a disco. Parents will also be encouraged to attend.
Ngallagunda Aboriginal Corporation - $650 for a holiday program for youth aged 12-18 years from the Ngallagunda Community. Those attending will be able to organise a disco/fun night and participate in a two-day horse-riding and fishing trip.
Wyndham Youth Service - $650 for a 20-day holiday program for predominantly Aboriginal youth aged 12-18 years from the Wyndham area. Activities will include tye-dying, sewing, indoor sports, water sports at the town pool, mural painting and discos.
Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre - $500 for a six-day cultural program for predominantly Aboriginal youth aged 12-18 years from the Billiluna Community. Elders will take participants into the bush to teach them about language, dancing, story-telling and bush skills.
