Children can look forward to an action-packed school holiday, with the announcement of new Government-funded holiday programs throughout the State's rural area. "Thirty organisations have been funded to run Youth Development Holiday Programs for young people in secondary school years 8-12 during the July holidays," Family and Children's Services Minister June van de Klashorst announced today. "Young people will be able to participate in a range of indoor and outdoor activities including individual and team sports, art and music workshops, cultural awareness exercises and life skills lessons. "The programs will provide young people with challenges and many new experiences, enhance their self-esteem, and help them to develop social, teamwork and leadership skills." Mrs van de Klashorst said the funding demonstrated the Government's commitment to supporting young people and their families. The following organisations have received funding: Eastern Goldfields YMCA - $2,000 for a two-week holiday program for youth aged 12-17 years from Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Activities will include a two-day survival skills camp, skating, swimming, go-karting, horse-riding and rock-climbing. Eastern Goldfields Aboriginal Advancement Council - $2,000 for a Two-week holiday program for predominantly Aboriginal youth aged 12-17 years from Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Activities will include cultural and sporting days, trips to the movies and bush tours. Shire of Mullewa - $1,300 for an 11-day holiday program for young people aged 12-16 years visiting or residing in Mullewa. The program features video nights, streetsports, art and craft days, Internet training, ten pin bowling, rollerskating, barbecues, discos and an excursion to Coalseam National Park. Meekatharra Youth and Social Centre - $1,300 for a five-day holiday program for youth aged 13-17 years from Meekatharra. Participants will be provided with self-esteem workshops, legal information sessions and a range of leisure activities. Geraldton-Greenough Youth Advisory Council - $1,000 for a six-day holiday program for youth aged 12-18 years from the Geraldton and Greenough areas. Activities include surfing, sandboarding, trips to the movies, skateboarding, rollerskating, an excursion to Kalbarri and a 'burger bash'. The Art and Cultural Development Council, Geraldton - $900 for a six-day design workshop for disadvantaged girls aged 13-17 years from indigenous and multi-cultural backgrounds from Geraldton. Participants will be assisted to produce their own designs and transpose them onto a surfboard or skateboard. Youth Involvement Council, South Hedland - $2,000 for a 14-day holiday program for predominantly 'at risk' Aboriginal youth aged 12-17 years from the local area. Activities will include weekend bush camps, discos and information sessions on drugs etc. Newman YMCA - $1,565 for a 10-day holiday program for young people in secondary school years 8-12 from the local area. They will be provided with a range of challenging and relaxing holiday activities including sporting competitions, barbecues, arts and crafts and an 'under-age rage'. Roebourne Youth Centre Inc - $1,072 for a two-day cultural camp for Aboriginal youth aged 12-17 years from the Roebourne area. Participants will be provided with a range of activities designed to enhance self-esteem, motivation and confidence and increase their knowledge about their Aboriginal background and traditions. Merredin Shire Council - $650 for a one-day holiday program for youth aged 12-17 years visiting and residing in Merredin. The program is designed to coincide with the Olympic Torch relay as it passes through Merredin. Participants will be provided with activities such as wall-climbing, a kite-making workshop and a sports clinic. Old York Fire Station - $550 for a three-day holiday program for youth in secondary school years 8-12 from the Shire of York. Those attending will be provided with a two-day abseiling training course with an SES Instructor, a bus trip to Perth to experience live theatre and the opportunity to organise a band and DJ night. Toodyay Blue Light Youth Group - $800 for a holiday program for youth aged 12-18 years from Toodyay and surrounding areas. Activities will include music and graffiti art workshops and a disco. Shire of Mukinbudin - Youth Advisory Council - $1,500 for a holiday program for youth aged 13-17 years from Mukinbudin. Participants will camp in the metropolitan area for two days and visit Scitech, the Omni Theatre, Timezone and a Ten Pin Bowling alley. Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes - $1,900 for a five-day holiday program for youth in secondary school years 8-12 from Bridgetown-Greenbushes. Those attending will be provided with an excursion to Bunbury, a music session with a local band and activities such as t-shirt painting, skating and BMX riding. Walpole Sport and Recreation Centre Inc - $1,000 for a holiday program for youth aged 13-17 years from Walpole, Nornalup, Bow Bridge and Peaceful Bay. The program will be conducted at national parks around Walpole on alternate days. Tambellup Youth Centre - $1,300 for a program for youth aged 12-18 years from the Shire of Tambellup and surrounding areas over the holiday period. Participants will take part in a range of challenging indoor and outdoor activities including cycling programs, skating and team sports. City of Mandurah - Billy Dower Youth - $1,000 for a five-day holiday program for youth aged 12-18 years from the City of Mandurah. Those attending will be provided with a range of indoor and outdoor activities including wall-climbing, visits to the movies and Adventure World, ice-skating, white water rafting, horse-riding, arts and craft and dune restoration. Boyup Brook Teenscene Inc - $400 for a holiday program for youth aged 12-16 years from Boyup Brook and surrounding areas. Those attending will be provided with a range of sporting and educational activities and a three day camp aimed at fostering leadership and team building skills. Bunbury Regional Art Galleries - $400 for a one-week holiday program for youth aged 12-17 years from the Bunbury area. Those attending will be able to participate in a series of art and craft workshops at the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery. Balingup Progress Association - $500 for two three-day holiday workshops for youth aged 12-17 years from Balingup. The first workshop will enable youth to design and manufacture masks and headpieces to feature at the Balingup Medieval Carnival. Those attending the second workshop will be able to participate in performance and street theatre. YMCA of Busselton - $500 for a five-day holiday program for youth aged 12-17 years from Busselton, Nannup and Dunsborough. Activities will include abseiling, rocking-climbing, surfing, canoeing, sailing, art classes, cooking, circus skills lessons and video days. Nannup Telecentre - $500 for a six-day holiday program for youth aged 12-16 years from Nannup and surrounding areas. Those attending will be provided with skateboarding, fabric painting and 'Introduction to the Internet' workshops. Agencies for South-West Accommodation - $500 for a holiday program for disadvantaged youth aged 12-16 years from the South-West region. Those attending will be provided with a trip to Kalbarri to experience the unique environment of the State's North-West. Activities will include bush survival skills lessons, wildlife excursions and exposure to traditional Aboriginal culture. Djarindjin Aboriginal Corporation - $950 for a holiday program for Aboriginal youth aged 13-16 years from the Djarindjin community. The program will be conducted in the local area and activities will include fishing, camping, music, roller-skating, basketball, cultural exercises and eight ball competitions. Jarlmadangah Burru Aboriginal Corporation - $850 for a 10-day holiday program for youth aged 12-16 years from the Jarlmadangah Burra Community. Those attending will be transported to the Mowlabluff community in the Kimberleys. Activities will include excursions with mentors to visit significant cultural sites and cultural skills development and health workshops. Pandanus Park Aboriginal Corporation - $850 for a five-day holiday program for youth aged 12-18 years from the Pandanus community. The program will be conducted in the local area and activities will include a one-day camel trek with Aboriginal elders and youth development, drug awareness, road safety and first aid workshops. Ngaliwanyan Peoples Church, Looma Community - $850 for a seven day holiday program for youth in secondary school years 8-12 from Looma. The program will be conducted in the local community and Myroodah Crossing. Those attending will be provided with activities such as basketball, touch rugby, cricket, softball, fishing excursions, roller-skating, a canoeing excursion and a blue light disco. Ngallagunda Aboriginal Corporation, Gibb River Station - $850 for an eight-day holiday program for youth aged 13-15 years from the local area. Activities will include horse-riding, fishing, camping, discos and some novelty events. Beagle Bay Community - $713 for a two-week holiday program for youth aged 12-18 years from the local community. The program will be conducted in and around Beagle Bay near Broome. Activities will include family story-telling, TV nights, fishing, camping trips, arts and crafts and cultural activities such as dancing, singing, bush walks and food gathering. Kununurra Youth Services Inc - $800 for a teamwork and leadership camp for predominantly Aboriginal youth and those at risk of self-harm and juvenile crime from Kununurra, Wyndham, Kalumburu, Oombulgurrie, Warmun and Halls Creek.
