Government gives $250,000 to world-class hockey turf
29/2/00 The playing turf at the University of Western Australia's hockey fields in Mt Claremont is now at world standard thanks to a State Government grant presented today by Premier Richard Court.
Presenting a $250,000 cheque this morning, the Premier and Member for Nedlands said thousands of hockey players would used the international-standard synthetic turf hockey field, a similar surface to that being used at the Olympic hockey stadium in Sydney.
The University of WA Hockey Club is one of the largest in Australia, with around 800 members of all ages.
The Club combined with the State Government, the University of Western Australia, and the UWA Sports Association to fund the $750,000 project, which also included lighting and new club rooms.
"The new facilities have already successfully hosted the Australian University Games hockey competition last September and have prompted the return of the State's Classic League matches, boosting spectator numbers at the matches," Mr Court said.
Mr Court said the State Government's contribution was from the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund which in the past five years, had given $60 million to worthwhile recreation projects around the State.
