Three Halls Creek communities are among the recipients in the latest round of Government grants aimed at improving regional airport facilities.
Transport Minister Murray Criddle announced the grants today as part of the 2000-2001 Regional Airports Development Scheme (RADS). Since its establishment by the Transport Minister seven years ago, RADS has contributed around $12 million to almost 80 airports around the State.
$25,000 will go to Balgo for the development of a master plan, needed to provide clear direction on future capital works for an airstrip that started as a small community facility but now services a much wider area. Billiluna and Mulan will receive $40,000 and $46,461 respectively for the installation of runway lights to allow for nighttime Royal Flying Doctor Service access.
"I am particularly pleased that these remote communities will soon have better access to RFDS emergency medical facilities as a direct result of the scheme," Mr Criddle said.
"The Government is contributing $1.8 million to the improvement of regional airport infrastructure through RADS this year.
"In the past seven years we have seen consistent improvements in airport facilities in regional Western Australia.
"The State Government is committed to helping regional communities build better airport infrastructure.
"We believe it is essential for social and economic well-being."
In total, 28 projects across WA received RADS funding this year.
