Govt to move quickly to complete assessment of cyclone damage
13/4/96
Premier Richard Court says the State Government will move quickly to complete the formal assessment of cyclone damage in the North of the State so that the need for any disaster relief can be identified and addressed.
Following a briefing from Emergency Services Minister Bob Wiese and Treasury officials, the Premier said he was keen to ensure that the national disaster relief arrangements were triggered quickly.
"The Government will also be meeting with the City of Perth to progress arrangements for an appeal to assist families who have suffered hardship as a result of Cyclone Olivia," Mr Court said.
"Meanwhile, officers of the Department of Family and Children's Services are currently 'on the ground' in the affected areas offering practical assistance and counselling."
Mr Court said the respective Government agencies were also reporting on damage to their particular infrastructure.
"The Government is ensuring that practical assistance can be delivered quickly to assist the affected families, businesses and communities," he said.
