The Goldfields Art Centre has received a $45,000 grant from the Lotteries Commission's Gordon Reid Foundation for Access to the Performing Arts, Racing and Gaming Minister Norman Moore announced today.
The money will help meet the performance costs and travel and accommodation costs of touring theatre productions to Kalgoorlie.
Mr Moore said that the Goldfields Art Centre was one of 12 regional performing arts venues which received regular Lotteries funding.
It helped country people to access performing arts which normally would only be seen in the metropolitan area.
The Minister said that under the scheme, Country Arts WA helped organise the touring performances by liaising with theatre production companies in Perth.
Country Arts WA then put together a 'menu' of touring productions which were circulated to the regional centres.
These centres, including the Goldfields Arts Centre, then chose the productions they wanted to bring to their area for the benefit of the community.
"In 1998-99 for example, 11 different theatre productions were brought to the Goldfields Art Centre," Mr Moore said.
"This funding is like the Government's Country Sport Enrichment Scheme under which money is made available to take top sporting teams and sportsmen and women to regional Western Australia.
"These are just two examples of the State Government's program to make sure that regional Western Australians are able to access first-class entertainment and sports on their own doorstep."
