Tourism Minister Norman Moore today announced that the Western Australian Government through EventsCorp would be supporting the 2000 Respect Yourself Forest Rally as a regional event.
This year's rally gets under way from the Busselton Jetty car park at 9.30am on Saturday. Vasse MLA Bernie Masters will wave the cars off.
The annual Respect Yourself Forest Rally is the Western Australian round of the Australian Rally Championship Super Series and is promoted by the Western Australian Car Club.
The rally attracts the leading crews from around Australia and the Possum Bourne Subaru Team, which is based in New Zealand. Each year there have been more than 60 cars entering the event, with 84 participating in 1998.
Mr Moore said the Government was providing support to move the event to the South-West. This funding would be in addition to the support already provided by Healthway and WA Health Promotions.
The rally had been based in the Mundaring region for the past five years.
However, pressure from the Water Corporation to move it away from the Mundaring Weir had seen it re-located to the South-West.
"We believe that the new location will provide great conditions for the participants, giving them and spectators the chance to experience WA's South-West tourism and wine growing area," Mr Moore said.
"With Telstra Rally Australia to be staged for the 13th time this year, WA is renowned for staging world-class rallies.
"I am confident that the 2000 Respect Yourself Forest Rally will further enhance that reputation."
The rally will be based in and around the Nannup region with rally headquarters and the presentation dinner at the Geographe Bay Resort, Busselton.
