Greenough prisoners busy working on renovation program at Greenough Hamlet
6/7/99
Minimum-security prisoners at Greenough Regional Prison have been busy working in the local community with an extensive renovation program at the historic Greenough Hamlet.
Attorney General Peter Foss said a work party of eight prisoners had been working at the site since March preparing the hamlet for the spring and summer tourist season.
"Prisoners have made and installed barbecue tables and chairs for use by the public as well as giving the hamlet a general clean-up," Mr Foss said.
"They have improved the site's drainage, cleared undergrowth and constructed and repaired fencing."
Mr Foss said the prison's Greenough Hamlet project was on-going and prisoners would soon begin work on restoring buildings.
"Their carpentry, painting, roofing and reticulation projects would greatly enhance the hamlet's tourist potential," Mr Foss said.
The Minister said the Greenough Hamlet project was another example of the valuable community work being undertaken by minimum-security prisoners from prisons and work camps around Western Australia.
