Growing international interest in Australian bush foods
8/7/98
A major international order for Australian bush foods was indicative of the significant opportunities being presented to farmers pursuing bush food options, Primary Industry Minister Monty House said today.
Mr House said that British supermarket leader, Sainsbury's, recently placed a substantial order for a range of Australian bush foods including herbs, spices, chutneys, biscuits and relishes.
"There is growing interest in bush foods among Australian restaurants, consumers and overseas buyers," he said.
"For local shoppers in Western Australia, bush food products are already available in some supermarkets and gourmet outlets."
Mr House said the industry in WA was in its early days, and Agriculture Western Australia's New Industries program was supporting its growth.
"A committee of local chefs, wholesalers, food writers and other interested parties has been formed to develop the bush food industry and to maximise the opportunity for WA growers," he said.
"We would like to identify growers and manufacturers who have an interest in bush food production, and who are willing to invest in the early stages of a State-based bush food industry product."
Mr House said Agriculture WA was keen to highlight local bush food flavours and species.
"With international markets craving more healthy and organic foods, the bush food industry represents a unique opportunity for WA growers and manufacturers.
"Agriculture WA was also examining the development of a marketing and promotional plan to introduce WA bush food to the Australian public on a large scale."
