Health Minister John Day today presented Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital nurse Sue Davis with the esteemed $10,000 Helen Bailey Scholarship for nurses undertaking research at a Masters or Doctoral level in Western Australia.
Mr Day said Ms Davis' work with in palliative care and her research into the information needs of families of palliative care patients made her a deserving winner.
"Ms Davis has been involved in establishing a consultative palliative care service at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, which is now well developed with over 600 patients per year," he said.
"In addition, her research into communication difficulties encountered by nurses and the families of patients with advanced cancer will be used to design an intervention model to address this issue and improve the quality of care.
"Ms Davis' proposal was excellent, clearly presented and justified, and I think she is a very worthy winner of this scholarship."
The scholarship, offered since 1971, was established in honour of Helen Bailey's extensive contribution to the advancement of nurse education in WA.
Helen Bailey served as the first education officer at the Nurses Board of Western Australia and founded the Central Training School for Nurses, which later amalgamated with the Royal Perth Hospital School to become the Western Australian School of Nursing.
Mr Day said it was clear that Helen Bailey had made a significant contribution to the nursing profession in WA and the scholarship in her honour continues to recognise the important work of registered nurses working in WA.
