Heritage grants for Stirling
16/10/00
A cottage on Old Balcatta Road in Carine and the Church of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Maylands will each receive in excess of $20,000 in the fourth round of the State Heritage Grants Program.
Heritage Minister Graham Kierath recently announced the funds as part of almost $1 million in heritage grants awarded across the State.
Mr Kierath said the cottage of limestone and corrugated-iron roof, with its nearby stable and shed, was constructed between 1880 and 1900 and would received a grant of $22,000.
He said it was one of the earliest buildings near Lake Gwelup and is a rare example of a nineteenth century structure still in existence in the lakes area.
"The cottage represents the history of people in the rural outskirts of Perth," the Minister said.
"This $22,000 grant will help with much needed repairs to its stone walls, verandah foundations, concrete removal and air drains."
Mr Kierath said the Church of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs on Seventh Avenue in Maylands, which was built in 1924, planned to spend its $21,000 grant on repairs to its crucifix.
"The Roman Catholic Church has become a local landmark with its very tall design and large rounded windows set high in its wall," he said.
Mr Kierath said the $1 million in grants announced recently would go to 73 projects in metropolitan and regional Western Australia.
He said the average amount allocated in each grant was $13,000, with the majority of the sites owned by the private and commercial sector.
"The grants are a clear indication that the Government has a strong commitment to preserving heritage both in the metropolitan area and in regional Western Australia," Mr Kierath said.
"However, I would urge owners of heritage buildings also to meet their responsibility to preserving these community assets.
"The purpose of the grants is not to fund all heritage works throughout the State but to provide a helping hand to those projects deemed by the Heritage Council of WA to be most in need."
Mr Kierath said in all there were 142 applications for grants this year, requesting a total $7.2 million including one request for $1.6 million.
Of the 73 projects to receive grants, 61 were from regional WA and totalled $769,700 with 12 projects in the metropolitan area receiving $187,000.
