A high-ranking delegation from Zhejiang Province in China is aiming to build stronger trade and investment links during a six-day visit to Perth.

Commerce and Trade Minister Hendy Cowan welcomed the visitors at an official reception last night.

Mr Cowan said there were many opportunities for Western Australian business in Zhejiang, especially in developing joint ventures.

"Zhejiang, one of China's wealthiest provinces, is known as the 'Land of Rice and Fish', which means roughly the same as 'Milk and Honey' does here," he said.

"With a strong agricultural sector, a well-educated workforce and good transport links, it provides a sound base for food processing and manufacturing to service major markets in China.

"The provincial government has made a strong commitment to raising the standard of living and is seeking expertise in urban planning and environmental management.

"Zhejiang is also renowned for its natural beauty and the delegation is keen to promote tourism."

The visit celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Sister-State relationship between WA and Zhejiang and follows Mr Cowan's visit to Hangzhou, the provincial capital, in October this year.

The delegation, led by Mr Sun Jiaxian, deputy chairman of the Zhejiang Political Consultative Conference, includes provincial trade and foreign affairs officials and a representative of the Zhejiang Federation of Industry and Commerce.

While in Perth, the delegation will host a trade and investment seminar and open an exhibition of photographs depicting Zhejiang lifestyles and landscapes.
