Hillcrest Primary School's 470 students are enjoying the benefits of a new undercover assembly area, officially opened today by Education Minister Colin Barnett.
Last year, more than $260,000 was spent on building the undercover area, including a sports storeroom, and extending a car parking area in front of the school.
Today, at a school assembly, Mr Barnett unveiled a plaque to commemorate the new works.
The project is part of the State Government's $25 million five-year commitment from 1995 to provide covered assembly areas at schools around the State.
Under this program, 83 schools have received newly-built covered assembly areas.
Mr Barnett said covered assembly areas were integral to activities during and after school hours, such as assemblies, drama productions, school meetings and undercover sports.
"They are also havens during wet weather and cool respites during hot summers," he said.
The Minister said Hillcrest Primary School was supported by a hardworking group of parents whom he acknowledged for their ongoing efforts and support for the school's diverse range of programs.
These included strong links with John Forrest Senior High School, which see some students receive instrumental music tuition each week.
