Historic Pine Lodge in Cottesloe is to be placed on the State register of heritage places.
Heritage Minister Graham Kierath said the 91-year-old house had sufficient cultural heritage significance to warrant protection.
"This is the sort of house which the community should do everything to preserve," Mr Kierath said.
"It is a significant home which adds to the array of structures and the diversity of designs in the street that represent various time periods throughout the history of the State."
Mr Kierath said the house at 42 John Street was a one-storey structure that was rich in history.
It was built in 1909 for William Zimpel, a prominent furniture merchant and manufacturer and is representative of the large homes built during the increase in population and prosperity following the gold rush in the 1890s.
"Pine Lodge is valued for its landmark setting among the dense plantation of mature Norfolk Island pines which are the main feature which makes the area a heritage precinct," he said.
Mr Kierath said the interim heritage listing for Pine Lodge would suspend proposed building extension works at the house that were approved by the Cottesloe Council.
The building works would only proceed if the Heritage Council was of the opinion that the extensions would not have a detrimental impact on the heritage value of the structure.
"I am advised that the planned works would not detract from the heritage value of the building, but that will have to be determined," the Minister said.
"This is a case where through sensible negotiation the rights of the building owners and the heritage significance to the community can both be accommodated."
