Premier Richard Court says all Western Australians should feel a sense of pride in today's historic launch of the replica 17th century sailing ship, the Duyfken.

Mr Court said the Duyfken was a 'living' museum, a symbol of the Dutch mariners who played such an important part in Australia's early history, and a testament to the craftsmanship and skill of a talented group of Western Australians.

"As Premier I am immensely proud that this project was initiated in WA and that we have had the opportunity to follow its progress from the laying of the keel in January 1997 by the Crown Prince of the Netherlands to today's historic launch two years later," the Premier said.

"Since those early days the project has generated a lot of interest in WA, throughout the nation and overseas.

"Many of us have watched with pride and awe as the Duyfken has taken shape at the Fremantle Museum site and we have marvelled at the ancient skills that have been used by the craftsmen and women in faithfully recreating a wooden Dutch sailing ship."

Mr Court said the Duyfken had been a 'living' history lesson that had been particularly beneficial to WA school children as they learnt about the nation's maritime history.

The Duyfken project had capitalised on the skills developed in the building of the'Endeavour' replica and confirmed WA's reputation as a world leader in replica boat building.

"WA has a proud maritime tradition from the early explorers and settlers to the America's Cup challenges and defence, the feats of yachtsmen Jon Sanders and David Dicks, and the building of wonderful boats such as the Endeavour and now the Duyfken," he said.

"This ship will be a floating advertisement to the skills and dedication of the Western Australians who have built her."

The State Government provided $500,000 towards the reconstruction and other support services. Funds were also provided by the Australian and Netherlands Governments.
