Emergency accommodation services in the Midland area received a boost today with the announcement of a big increase in funding to Swan Emergency Accommodation.

Family and Children's Services Minister Cheryl Edwardes, and Federal Family Services Minister Judi Moylan today announced an increase of more than $85,000 per year to the organisation.

Swan Emergency Accommodation will now receive $400,000 to provide emergency accommodation for young people and a similar service for families.

The service is funded under the joint Commonwealth/State Supported Accommodation Assistance Program which provides services for Western Australians in crisis.

Mrs Edwardes said the organisation provided vital services to support vulnerable young people in the Midland area who were at risk.

"The young people may be at risk because of substance or alcohol abuse, violence, homelessness or family breakdown. Swan Emergency Accommodation provides them with a safe and secure environment during a crisis or its aftermath."

Mrs Moylan said the service also offered vital support services and accommodation for families in crisis.

"The service provides crisis service for up to four families and medium term accommodation for up to five families who are then assisted to independent living," she said.

"All of the services provided by Swan Emergency Accommodation are highly valued and play an essential role in meeting the needs of disadvantaged homeless people in the Midland district."
