Housing Minister Dr Kim Hames today presented the Jarlmadangah Community in Derby with a $15,000 cheque for winning the Ministry of Housing's tidiest community competition.
Dr Hames said Jarlmadangah beat 12 other communities from across Western Australia to take out first prize.
The competition was developed by the Aboriginal Housing Board in 1997 as a way to promote healthy environments in Aboriginal communities.
"Members of the Jarlmadangah community are to be congratulated for their outstanding commitment to environmental health, community greening, housing maintenance and traffic management," Dr Hames said.
Lombadina community in Broome won second prize of $10,000 and the Quartz Blow community near Halls Creek took out the $5,000 third prize.
The runners up were Karmulinunga community in Derby and Ninga Mia community in Kalgoorlie - each awarded $2,000. A $1,000 encouragement award went to Iragul community near Norseman.
"This competition is a great opportunity for communities around the State to focus on their local environment, with the chance to win substantial prize money to put back into their community," Dr Hames said.
The Ministry of Housing contributed $20,000 to the awards and with the Aboriginal Affairs Department, the WA Health Department and ATSIC each contributed $5,000.
"Raising the standard of environment health in Aboriginal communities is a vital part of the battle to prevent disease and infant mortality as well as generally raising the quality of life across the board," the Minister said.
