Perth's reputation as the 'City of Lights' was reaffirmed last night, with the lighting up of Kings Park's famous Fraser Avenue.
Environment Minister Cheryl Edwardes was at Kings Park last night to witness the lighting up of one of the State's most popular tourist attractions.
Mrs Edwardes said Kings Park became just a little more special last night with the spectacular sight of 70 lemon-scented gum trees along Fraser Avenue illuminated against the night sky.
Western Power and TVW Channel 7 sponsored the project, which involved a light being installed at the base of the trees lining Fraser Avenue.
"Both Western Power and TVW Channel 7 have demonstrated what great corporate citizens they are with this very special gift to the city," Mrs Edwardes said.
"On behalf of all Western Australians I thank them both."
Mrs Edwardes said Kings Park was a Western Australian icon, which was enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year.
"These lights will be turned on for special occasions during the year such as Australia Day, Valentine's Day, Anzac Day and Christmas Day," she said.
"Changeable coloured filters will reflect each special day."
Mrs Edwardes said the lights had been chosen carefully to ensure they did not disturb bird-life or the local possum population.
She said Kings Park's tree specialist had been on hand during the three-month installation project, to ensure tree roots were not disturbed.
