York will once again become the nation's jazz capital as international and interstate enthusiasts converge in the town for the 14th York Jazz Festival.

Launching the festival, Tourism Minister Norman Moore said the event had enjoyed a resurgence over the past two years and now attracted the very best performers from around the world and Australia.

"Stars at this year's event include James Morrison, Marcia Hines, American George Cables and the Swedish Jazz Orchestra," Mr Moore said.

"The success and growth of this event can be directly attributed to dedication and teamwork from the York community, which this year expects to accommodate 5,000 visitors over the weekend.

"Also, York Events Management, who organise the festival, have put a tremendous amount of effort to raise the profile of the event and provide a wonderful setting."

Mr Moore said visitors to York would also have an opportunity to explore the town's unique historical appeal.

"York offers a range of interesting tourist attractions, museums and some magnificent building restoration projects which offer people a chance to step back in time," he said.

"However, WA's oldest inland town also has modern tourist facilities giving people the best of both worlds.

"Arts and music events such as the York Jazz Festival are growing in popularity in Australia.

"Recently released figures from the Australia Arts Council show the arts industry is one of the fastest-growing in the nation.

"The York Jazz Festival is recognised as one of the best and contributes to our cultural calender and is a significant event attracting overseas and interstate tourists."

Mr Moore said WA was already developing a strong event-based tourism market through events such as Rally Australia and the Heinekin Classic golf tournament and next year would be known as the Year of the Events.

He said WA had the perfect environment for predominantly outdoor events such as the Jazz Festival.

"As a tourist town, York is in a perfect position to capitalize on the event while local jazz performers will be given a chance to showcase their talents," the Minister said.
