Launch of 1999 as International Year of Older Persons
1/10/98
Western Australia's seniors and the valuable contributions they make to society were acknowledged today, when Seniors' Minister Rhonda Parker officially launched 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons.
Speaking at a special ceremony at the Octagon Theatre, Mrs Parker said the International Year of Older Persons aimed to challenge stereotypes, bring about a change in attitudes to older people and build relationships between generations.
"For too long our seniors have been under-valued and the community is encouraged to recognise what our older people add to society," she said.
"Already 14 per cent of Western Australians are aged 60 years or over; by the year 2021 that figure will have increased to 22 per cent. Many people do not realise that more than three quarters of seniors live independently in their own homes, with less than six per cent living in supported accommodation.
"There is a myth that older people are a drain on society - the fact is that older people are more likely to provide financial and practical assistance to families than to receive it.
"One in five seniors makes a valuable contribution as part of the army of volunteer workers throughout communities in WA.
"To celebrate the International Year of Older Persons we will promote principles that are important to seniors, including independence, participation, self-fulfilment and dignity.
"To enable community members around the State to participate in the International Year of Older Persons, special grants totalling $200,000 have been allocated to a range of groups focusing on intergenerational activities.
"One of these is Seniors Cyberspace - an initiative of Mercy Community Services which will involve seniors and young people discussing history on the Internet.
"Another is a school volunteers' program called Goldfields Magic, where Aboriginal elders will assist and guide children at educational risk.
"These and many other WA initiatives are part of a nationwide action program which will celebrate the year.
"I would urge all Western Australians to get involved in celebrating 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons and consider how you can generate new opportunities to promote positive ageing among all generations."
