Leonora's new Aboriginal community patrol is set to tackle ongoing problems of alcohol abuse and truancy.
Launched today by Aboriginal Affairs Minister Dr Kim Hames, the patrol brings together local Aboriginal organisations, the Shire of Leonora, the Western Australian Police Service and other Government agencies in a joint effort to deal with these and other issues.
"I am certain the work which has gone into this initiative will be rewarded with a community patrol that helps achieve a better understanding and empathy between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in the area," Dr Hames said.
"Patrols such as this one and the other 17 already in place around WA are a genuine community response to community issues - always the most effective way of handling a difficult situation.
"The patrols began as an initiative by Aboriginal people to help their communities and the program has received State Government backing due to their outstanding effectiveness.
"Underlining this commitment, WA patrols received funding of more than $800,000 this year through the Department of Aboriginal Affairs (AAD)."
Dr Hames said the Leonora Community Patrol was part of the State-wide Government initiative to reduce contact between the Aboriginal community and the justice system and to provide a safer community environment.
Patrols assist in building and developing strategic partnerships between Aboriginal people, Government and the wider community, as well as providing appropriate local responses to local needs.
"Because it is operated on a bipartisan basis, the Leonora patrol, as with all the others, offers a valuable opportunity to improve relations between the police and the local Aboriginal community," Dr Hames said.
The Lotteries Commission and the AAD have funded the patrol, with the Shire of Leonora acting as the umbrella organisation for the project. The shire also contributed towards the purchase of a vehicle.
