Launch of The Coates Hire Avon Descent at the South Perth Yacht Club
27/5/99
The Coates Hire Avon Descent had a special place in Western Australian sporting history, Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore said today.
He was speaking at the South Perth Yacht Club at the official launch of the 27th Avon Descent to be held on August 7 and 8 this year.
"We have been proud to see Olympic champions take part," Mr Moore said.
"But we have been equally delighted to see novices and families, face the challenges of one of the finest white water events in the world.
"It's also a terrific event for spectators - and this is why the Coates Hire Avon Descent has a special place in the hearts of Western Australians."
Mr Moore said that like all events which endured the test of time, there must be evolution and adaptability.
"In the past year, a new board structure has been introduced which builds on the old traditions but also prepares the event to move into the new millennium," he said.
"With a new board comes new initiatives, including extensive marketing interstate and overseas and the forging of links with similar events in Ireland, the United States, South Africa and Malaysia."
The Minister said there were new publicity and marketing initiatives and a new race magazine, as well as moves to build up power boat entries.
He was delighted that Coates Hire had decided to continue its involvement for a further three years as naming rights sponsor.
The company's efforts in supplying much of the equipment and in treating the event as a training weekend for staff was of major importance for its success.
"The scene is now set for another fantastic and exciting event in 1999," Mr Moore said.
