A booklet aimed at helping first-time computer buyers avoid common pitfalls was launched by Fair Trading Minister Doug Shave today.

Speaking at Fremantle computer cafe Net Trek, Mr Shave said the 'Buying a Computer' booklet would make the process of choosing computer equipment easier.

"It is simple and straightforward and explains exactly what you need to know, or consider, before you walk into a computer shop," he said.

"The 20-page booklet includes tips on avoiding common pitfalls associated with buying a computer and has a glossary of computer jargon so you can understand what the salesperson is talking about."

The Australian Consumers' Association estimates that by the year 2000 half of all Australian households will have a computer.

"Young families form a major group among first-time purchasers and need to know about the common problems when buying computer equipment," Mr Shave said.

"For instance, too many people buy on price alone, instead of carefully comparing the features of different computers.

"They need to think about whether they will use software which is offered and also closely examine the warranty provisions of any deal."

Mr Shave said the booklet had been developed by the Ministry in consultation with the industry. The need for the publication was identified after requests for advice from consumers and as a result of complaints about some retail practices.

Last financial year, complaints to the Ministry about computer sales and service formed the single largest group of complaints by consumers in the retail sector.

"I am pleased to say the industry has recognised such problems and supported the development of this publication," the Minister said.

"Unfortunately, where you have a burgeoning industry with new technology involving purchasers with limited product knowledge, such people are not well-equipped to make informed decisions."

From Monday, the booklet will be available from the Ministry of Fair Trading by ringing 9222 0666 or 1800 199 117 (country callers only).

The booklet will be made available soon to computer sales outlets and promoted through Western Australian primary schools.

Buying A Computer information is now on the Ministry's website (http://www.wa.au/gov/mft).
